Car Seat Law Going Into Effect

The new child restraint law goes into effect on May 5th. (I'm sorry I originally wrote July 1). Every child under the age of 8 needs to be some sort of car seat or booster seat. If your child is over 4'9" they are exempt from the law. (source) Good luck getting your 7 year olds who have been out of car seats for 2 years, back in them.

(Sorry I haven't posted for awhile, the weather is too nice to be in front of the computer, hope you are enjoying it too.)

Does anyone know why this law came about? I can't find any real stats proving that kids (older ones) will be safer in car seats. Is this just another push from car seat manufacturers to increase their revenue?

I'm glad. I've had people (friends and family) think I'm a little weird for insisting my child ride in care seats in their vehicle (when it's just a short ride), so it will be nice to have a law to back me up.

I emailed the sponsor of the bill, TIm Cosgrove, because I was very unhappy about it. He sent me these stats:

• In Utah we lost 34 children just between the ages of 5 and 8, whom died in motor vehicle crashes between 2002 and 2006.

• In Utah we had 2,188 children who were severely injured between the ages of 5 and 8, that were injured in a motor vehicle crash whom were not in a booster seat.

I asked him how many of those children weren't in seatbelts and he never responded. I also pointed out that banning all cars would keep our children even safer.
